Imphal, June 29 : With a view to make it more systematic, all the National Highways of India linking different States have been renamed in line with the system followed in the USA.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in April last year, the National Highways have been given new numbers.

The new highway numbering system would indicate the direction and location of the highways.

The Imphal-Dimapur highway, earlier known as NH-39 has been renamed as NH-2 .

This highway will start from Dibrugarh, Assam and pass through Mokokchung, Wokha, Kohima, Imphal and Churachandpur before terminating at Tuivang, Mizoram.

The highway connecting Mokokchung in Nagaland to Imphal via Tuensang, Sampurre, Meluri and Jessami would be known as NH-202 .

Moreover, the Imphal-Moreh road has been renamed as NH-102 .

Likewise, the erstwhile NH-53 which connects Imphal to Karimganj in Assam via Jiribam, Lakhipur, Silchar and Badarpur would be known as NH 37 .

Milestones erected along Imphal-Jiribam highway have been already painted with the new name NH 37.
